This lone painting represents a girl swarmed in the ambiguous depths of the sea. I imagine the water siren as a lost person, unseen in a horizon - specifically, the horizon of my grandfather’s beach painting which I always loved. She is a metaphorical representation of myself, the girl who had not yet been born during my grandfather’s prime artist years - still at sea, born in the ocean. In this piece I establish an ethereal underwater atmosphere using acrylic paints, while depicting female beauty and complexities from a female gaze of my own. I really wanted to experiment with bioluminescence through colours and lighting in this work, bringing the submerged world to life.
